Ranieri putting focus on football

The pair have indulged in verbal spats ever since Mourinho took over at Inter while Ranieri was at Juventus before moving on to the Stadio Olimpico.

Ranieri could be forgiven if he were to bear a grudge as it was the Portuguese who replaced him at Chelsea after he was sacked by Blues owner Roman Abramovich in May 2004.

This has been the fifth match where Mourinho has refused to speak to the press beforehand but, when asked if he had a message to send to the Inter boss, Ranieri said: "No, see you tomorrow and we will talk tomorrow."

Saturday's match is vital for both teams. Inter hold a four-point lead at the top of the table although it is Roma who are on better form with their midweek 2-0 win over Bologna lifting them level on points with AC Milan in third.

Ranieri continued: "It's beautiful to see Roma playing the match of the year with eight games remaining.

"This means my men have worked very well.

"It will be a wonderful game. We hope we can celebrate at the end."

The 58-year-old believes the teams are "totally different", describing Inter as a "battleship".

He said: "I expect an aggressive Inter, with different systems of play, a great team, very compact, always short, very strong on the counter-attack, strong set-pieces."

The former Valencia boss was also happy to heap pressure on the visitors.

On being asked who had most to lose, Ranieri was unequivocal, saying: "Inter. It is they who must retain the Scudetto. They are the strongest team."

The Giallorossi have lost just twice in Rome this season, their last defeat dating back to October 25 when they fell 1-0 to Livorno.

Francesco Totti announced earlier this week he had recovered from his knee injury and he has been included in the squad for the game.

A 3-0 triumph over Livorno in midweek ended a three-match winless streak for Mourinho's Inter.

"We are enjoying our current position in the standings and we hope we will play a great match in Rome," said Inter president Massimo Moratti.

"We go into this match in good condition. We have overcome our psychological and physical block as seen against Livorno."

However, Mourinho's impasse with striker Mario Balotelli shows no sign of being bridged with the 19-year-old forward omitted from the squad for the fourth consecutive game.

Moving Forwards

2002–03 saw Inter take a respectable second place and also managed to make it to the 2003 Champions League semi-finals against Milan. Although they drew on aggregate 1–1 with Milan, Inter lost on the away goals rule, even though both matches were played in the same stadium. It was another disappointment but they were finally on the right track.

However, once again Massimo Moratti's impatience got the better of him, Hernán Crespo was sold after just one season, and Hector Cuper was fired after only a few games. Alberto Zaccheroni stepped in, a life-long Inter fan but also the man who had been in charge of Lazio's 4–2 win over Inter in 2002; the fans were sceptical. Zaccheroni brought nothing new to the side, apart from two fantastic wins over Juventus 3–1 in Turin and 3–2 at the San Siro and the season was again nothing special. Furthermore, they only just managed to qualify for the Champions League by finishing in fourth place, only a point ahead of Parma. Inter's only saving grace in 2003–04 was the arrival of Dejan Stanković and Adriano in January 2004, both solid players that filled the gap left by the departures of Hernán Crespo and Clarence Seedorf.

La Grande Inter

Following the war, Internazionale won their sixth championship in 1953 and the seventh in 1954. Following these titles, Inter were to embark upon the best years of their history, affectionately known as the era of La Grande Inter (The Great Inter). During this period with Helenio Herrera as head coach, the club won three league championships in 1963, 1965 and 1966. The most famous moments during this decade also include Inter's two back-to-back European Cup wins. In 1964, Inter won the first of those tournaments, playing against the famous Spanish club Real Madrid. The next season, playing in their home stadium, the San Siro, they defeated two-time former champions Benfica.

Following the golden era of the 1960s, Inter managed to win their 11th league title in 1971 and their twelfth in 1980. Inter were defeated for the second time in five years in the final of the European Cup, going down 2–0 to Johan Cruyff's Ajax in 1972. During the 1970s and the 1980s, Inter also added two Coppa Italias to their tally in 1977–78 and 1981–82.

Led by the German duo of Andreas Brehme and Lothar Matthäus, and Argentine Ramón Díaz, Inter captured the 1989 Serie A championship under coach Giovanni Trapattoni. Fellow German Jürgen Klinsmann and the Italian Supercup were added the following season but to little avail as Inter did not manage to defend their title.

Ricardo Quaresma

Ricardo Andrade Quaresma Bernardo (born 26 September 1983 in Lisbon) is a Portuguese footballer, partly of Gypsy heritage, who currently plays for Internazionale and for the Portuguese national team (last cap in 2008). Quaresma is usually positioned as an attacking winger.

Ricardo Quaresma's style of play can be defined as one with speed, grace, toughness, and often plays a free role on the pitch. Initially nicknamed "The Mustang" by former Sporting Clube de Portugal coach Laszlo Bölöni, his nickname in Portuguese is "Cigano", which literally translates from Portuguese into "Gypsy".

Quaresma is regularly compared to fellow Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo for the similarities both possess in terms of their speed and dribbling abilities, as well as their style of play. He also specialized the "Trivela" shooting technique, which is his ability to swerve and bend the ball perfectly with the outside of his boot when executing crosses, free kicks, and long shots.

At a young age, Quaresma was ranked higher in the pecking order than Cristiano Ronaldo. Portuguese national manager Carlos Queiroz once stated that Manchester United had the opportunity to sign Quaresma but opted for Ronaldo.
