Inter Milan road to Champions League final

Inter Milan battled for more than an hour with 10 men before booking a place in next month's Champions League final at Barcelona's expense on a triumphant night for the Italian side's coach Jose Mourinho.

The Spanish holders won the semifinal second leg 1-0 but Inter went through 3-2 on aggregate on a passionate night at the Nou Camp to put the Milan side through to their first final of Europe's elite club competition since 1972.

They will play Bayern Munich in the May 22 final in Madrid.

Portuguese Mourinho, a former assistant trainer at Barca, ran on to the pitch to celebrate with his players at the final whistle and clashed with Barca goalkeeper Victor Valdes as a hail of objects rained down from the stands.

"It's an incredible joy, I've won the Champions League (with Porto in 2004) but I must say today was better than winning the Champions League," Mourinho told Rai TV.

After losing last week's semi-final first leg in Milan 3-1, Barca coach Pep Guardiola fielded an ultra-attacking formation and with the home fans roaring their support the visitors' defence came under immediate pressure.

For all their early possession Barca were struggling to create chances and a Pedro volley in the 22nd minute that flashed narrowly wide was their first real effort on goal.

Tempers boiled over five minutes later when Inter midfielder Thiago Motta flung out an arm in a challenge with Sergio Busquets which sent the Barca player tumbling to the turf.

Former Barca player Motta, who had already been booked, was sent off, sparking a melee in which he grabbed Busquets by the back of the neck before being shepherded away.

The dismissal was the cue for a magnificent rearguard action from Inter who dealt with almost everything the fearsome Barca attack could throw at them.

Barca pressed and Lionel Messi curled a shot that Julio Cesar acrobatically tipped around the post before a thunderous Zlatan Ibrahimovic flashed just wide.

As the clock ticked down, Guardiola sent centre back Gerard Pique forward to play as an extra striker and it was his superbly taken goal in the 84th minute that gave Barca hope.

With the noise levels rising ever higher, they pressed for the goal that would send them through and had a goal at the death disallowed from Bojan Krkic when Yaya Toure was adjudged to have handled the ball in the build-up.

Inter have worn black and blue since 1908

Since its founding in 1908, Inter have worn black and blue stripes. It is rumored that black was chosen to represent night and blue was chosen to represent the sky. Aside from a short period during the World War II, Inter continued to wear the black and blue stripes, earning them the nickname Nerazzurri. For a period of time, however, Inter was forced to abandon their black and blue uniforms.

In 1928, Inter's name and philosophy made the ruling Fascist Party uneasy. As a result, during the same year the 20-year-old club was merged with Unione Sportiva Milanese. The new club was named Ambrosiana SS Milano after the patron saint of Milan. The flag of Milan (the red cross on white background) replaced the traditional black and blue. After World War II when the Fascists had fallen from power the club reverted to their original name and colors. In 2008, Inter celebrated their centenary with a red cross on their away shirt. Reminiscent of the flag of their city, the pattern continues to be used on their third kit to this day. Inter Milan reached Champions League final

Inter Milan reached the European Champions League final for the first time in 38 years, surviving Thiago Motta's first-half ejection to defeat defending champion Barcelona on 3-2 aggregate despite a 1-0 loss Wednesday night in Barcelona.

Inter will play Bayern Munich in the final May 22 at Madrid.

Gerard Pique scored in the 84th minute for Barcelona, which had lost the first leg in Italy 3-1 last week. Bojan Krkic put the ball into the net in injury time but it was disallowed because of a handball called on Yaya Toure during the buildup.

Motta received a yellow card in the 10th minute, then was given a red card in the 28th after tangling with Sergio Busquets.

A 2-0 victory would have tied the aggregate score and advanced Barcelona to its second straight final on away goals, but Inter frustrated FIFA Player of the Year Lionel Messi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic before nearly 100,000 fans at Camp Nou.

Serie A champions

On 22 April 2007, Inter were crowned Serie A champions for the second consecutive season after defeating Siena 2–1 at Stadio Artemio Franchi. Italian World Cup winning defender Marco Materazzi scored both goals in the 18th and 60th minute, with the latter being a penalty. Inter started the 2007–08 season with the goal of winning both Serie A and UEFA Champions League. The team started well in the league, topping the table from the first round of matches, and also managed to qualify for the Champions League knockout stage.

However, a late collapse leading to a 2–0 defeat with 10 men away to Liverpool on 19 February in the Champions League threw into question manager Roberto Mancini's future at Inter, and domestic form took a sharp turn of fortune with the team failing to win in the three following Serie A games (drawing with Sampdoria and major league opponents Roma, before losing away to Napoli, their first domestic defeat of the season). After being eliminated by Liverpool in the Champions League, Mancini then announced his intention to leave his job, only to change his mind the following day.

Alberto Zaccheroni

Alberto Zaccheroni (born 1 April 1953, in Meldola, Emilia-Romagna) is an Italian football manager, currently serving as head coach of Juventus F.C..

He is best known for having managed a number of top clubs in Serie A, and won a scudetto with A.C. Milan on 1999. He is renowned also for his unconventional and trademark 3-4-3 tactical system.

Career

Zaccheroni's playing career was cut short by injury, and he became a manager at the relatively young age of 30. His managerial career took off during the 1997-98 season with Udinese, guiding them to third place in the league and qualification for the UEFA Cup.

Milan

Zaccheroni's great results at Udinese attracted the attention of Italian giants A.C. Milan, who appointed him as manager after the San Siro club had endured 2 miserable seasons. Fellow Udinese colleagues, Oliver Bierhoff and Thomas Helveg joined him in Milan. Zaccheroni delivered instantly, as Milan won the league in the 1998-99 season, pipping Lazio and Fiorentina to the title. The following season was less successful for Zaccheroni as Milan exited the UEFA Champions League early, and although finishing 3rd in Serie A, they were never really in the running for the title. The 2000-01 season was even worse for Zaccheroni as Milan, again, struggled in the Champions League and failed to beat Paris Saint-Germain FC. This led AC Milan chairman Silvio Berlusconi to sack Zaccheroni and replace him with caretaker manager Cesare Maldini in the Spring of 2001.

Samuel Eto'o

After Maxwell completed the transfer from Internazionale, Joan Laporta confirmed that there was an agreement in principle between Barcelona and Internazionale for Zlatan Ibrahimović to join the club in exchange for Eto'o and €46 million. After Ibrahimović agreed terms with Barcelona, the club announced Eto'o would travel to Milan for his medical to complete the transfer.

On 27 July 2009 Eto'o passed his medical and signed for five years with Internazionale. On his first press-conference in Milan he declared that he was where he wanted to be and refused to compare himself to Ibrahimović saying: "I'm Samuel Eto'o and I don't want to compare myself to anyone. I believe the victories I have earned up to now can contribute to giving the right value to my name." On the 8th August, Eto'o scored his first competitive goal for Inter, in the 2009 Supercoppa Italiana. Two weeks later, Eto'o scored from the penalty spot against A.S. Bari in his first Serie A match. In the following match, the Milan Derby, Eto'o won Inter a penalty, after being brought down by Gennaro Gattuso in the box. This was important because that penalty caused Gattuso to be yellow-carded. He would eventually be sent off. Eto'o scored again on 13 September against Parma, his first goal from open play in a Serie A match.

At the end of September 2009, Eto'o demanded almost £2.75m from Barcelona after his transfer to Internazionale. The amount represented 15% of the US$29 million (£17.7m) fee which Inter paid Barcelona in July 2009. The demand was based on a Spanish rule that a player should get 15% of the amount of his transfer to another Spanish club. If the parties failed to reach a solution the matter could go to court. Eto'o scored two goals during a thrilling win over Palermo which ended 5-3, with a brace also being scored by Mario Balotelli. Eto'o also scored in the Champion's league round-of-16 against Chelsea, in the 2nd leg on 16 March 2010, which allowed Inter to progress to the quarter-finals.

Roma have slight advantage

Esteban Cambiasso says Inter Milan showed great character in their 3-0 win over Bologna.

Fellow midfielder Thiago Motta struck twice to help Inter maintain their leadership.

“I think we were able to keep the concentration up today for the whole 90 minutes,” Cambiasso declared to SkySport.

“We did everything ourselves today with a good level of performance.

“Inter are still top of the league with a one point advantage. It won’t be easy but all we have to think about is ourselves right now.

“Maybe it’s right that Roma have a small advantage by not having the distractions of Europe. However, when playing at this level it’s the adrenaline more than anything that keeps you going.”
